On Tuesday I was with a group called ‘Future Canterbury Network’ to look at how we could contribute to the rebuilding of Christchurch.
This network has been brought together by Philip Burdon as a group of business, cultural and social leaders (the members of the group are listed at http://futurecanterburynetwork.wordpress.com/fcn-membership/) to provide an independent Christchurch based group of leaders to monitor progress of all organisations in the city rebuild. See the FCN website for more details (http://futurecanterburynetwork.wordpress.com/) .
On Tuesday Dr Bruce Glavovic, Associate Director of the Joint Centre for Disaster Research located at Massey University spoke to us about how community groups can contribute to the rebuild process and how communities in other settings have acted. I am hoping we might be able to get Bruce to speak at a combined church leaders gathering in the near future.
The Press reporter who joined the group for the day wrote the following article to summarise the work of FCN (http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/news/christchurch-earthquake-2011/5174677/Group-to-rate-performance)
It was helpful to be part of this discussion and see the very important role churches will play in the spiritual and psycho-social health of people but also in forming and linking local community groups and voices.
