I've been reading this book lately and found it both challenging and inspiring. It is another journey into locally based living and doing mission together with those who live nearby. Jonathan is seeking to do this by putting down roots in Durham, North Carolina where he is a pastor at St John's Baptist Church (see stjohnsmbc.org). In the book Jonathan draws on ancient monastic principles and practice and seeks to live similarly in post-modern inner city life. The importance of stability and being aware of the context and mission opportunities of where we live.
He argues that we need to and can:-
- Cultivate stability by rooting yourself more deliberately in the place where you live.
- Truly engage with the people you are with.
- Slow down and participate in simpler rhythms of life.
- live in ways that speak to the deeper yearnings of the human heart.
I found this a an inspiring read and helpful personally.
