Vision for the South West (N02)
3 June 2012
The Halswell and Spreydon churches began talking about how we could work together for the good of mission in what will be a growing part of the city because of two factors.
Firstly Spreydon is on a journey of forming neighbourhood communities of Spreydon people who live in different suburbs. It is hoped that each of these local communities will be places where people can get to know each other, care for each other and support each other’s discipleship as well as form networks of relationships to do mission together where we live. One of these communities is the Halswell community of Spreydon people. As this neighbourhood community began to come together they started talking with Halswell Baptist about how we might work together in mission projects. Some exciting events were resulted.
Secondly the land at Musgroves which the Musgroves owners hope can be a base for a new Church/mission complex.
Once the two churches started talking together the possibility of becoming one church, Halswell Joining Spreydon, appeared as an exciting and way forward. Our conversations have been built on asking what is God pointing us towards and this seems the most effective way of developing a strong base for mission in South West Christchurch and being a model to other churches in Christchurch of how we can work together with a bigger vision.
The next step in the process of exploring this proposal of becoming one church is for the two churches to have a combined meeting of ministry leaders to look at the big picture of what is proposed and meet the leaders in their ministry from the other church. From there we will meet again to look at how the integration could happen in each ministry area.
